Test taking can be nerve wracking. Even high achieving students often have trouble taking tests because of the amount of pressure that comes with them. Preparation to take important tests is as much about learning the material as it is about getting ready for the experience of taking the test. In this blog, we’ll review steps you can take to ace that upcoming test.
Step 1: Define what “success” looks like.
Before making a study plan, it helps to know what kind of test you will be taking. Find out how the test will be formatted, what the time limit is if there is one, and what you absolutely need to know before walking into the classroom to take the test. That will show you how to practice and what you need to memorize as a baseline. Set a measurable goal, like 90% on a practice test or finishing with 5 minutes to review your work.
Step 2: Build a sustainable study plan.
Start by determining what you will study when by creating a simple calendar that gives you plenty of time to review and come back to each topic. Remember, cramming does not work and will leave you exhausted. Plan on 25-40 minute focus sessions with a 5-minute reset. Younger students can shoot for 10-15 minute blocks with 5-minute breaks. Breaks may seem like wasted time, but they’re an important part of the process. They help you stay focused and sharp, rather than burning out early.
Step 3: Practice like it’s the real thing.
Reading and rereading the notes you took in class will only get you so far. Prioritize active recall exercises, such as answering practice questions, creating and using flashcards, and explaining the material to someone else, like a parent or sibling. When you’re ready to practice for the test, simulate the testing conditions by timing yourself in a quiet place while you answer the questions. Practice may not make you perfect, but it will improve your confidence when you get to the real thing.
Step 4: Use feedback to get better.
As you prepare for your upcoming test, chances are, you won’t get everything right from the get-go. Do an error analysis, keeping track of the questions you miss and making a note of why you missed them. Create a personal “top 3” improvement list based on this analysis. If you find yourself truly stuck, ask a teacher, a friend or a tutor for help getting past the barriers.
Step 5: Prepare your mind and body.
One of the most important steps for test preparation is making sure your mind and body are ready. The final week leading up to the test, focus on eating healthy, nourishing meals and getting proper sleep. All-nighters the week of a test won’t help your performance. The night before the test, make sure you have your materials ready to go, your plan for arriving on time, and a calming strategy, like deep breathing, in your back pocket. Remember, you’ve spent all this time preparing, and now is your time to shine.
