Acts of service can always be meaningful. As charitable organizations always say, “every little bit counts.” For some, volunteering is a way to feel good while helping the community thrive. It can also be a great way to meet people and learn leadership skills. Others see service as a way to strengthen faith and feel closer to God. If faith is a factor in your choice to serve others, here are some ways to strengthen your faith through service:
Find a Cause That Speaks to You
If you are doing acts of service only to fulfill a requirement or complete an assignment, the personal impact will be minimal. See if you can find a cause that truly speaks to you, a problem in the community that you feel called to help alleviate or solve. For some, that cause may be hunger or homelessness. For others, it could be mental health or elder care. Find an issue that you hear about and wish could be solved.
Look for Unique Service Opportunities
Once you find a cause, find a way to support it. While any service opportunity can help the community, you may benefit from finding a unique way to contribute. Maybe you could get a group together to prepare meals for a local food pantry. You may be able to set up visits to elderly people in your community to provide companionship. Any way you can help your chosen cause can make a difference, but a more unique experience will help you live your faith through the acts of service.
Research the Impact of Your Efforts
Sometimes, we volunteer for a weekend and then move on with our lives. However, if you are serving others as a faith-building exercise, knowing how your actions made a difference is crucial. The best way to do this research is to ask the organization about how the program helps the community. Talk to fellow volunteers about how they feel about the difference they made. Consider watching testimonials from past recipients if it’s a larger organization. The more you see the impact you can make in a day or a week, the more motivated you will be to continue serving others.
Learn to See Christ in Others
Seeing the love of Jesus through fellow volunteers and leaders in a charitable organization is easy to do, but seeing him in members of the community who require their services can be more difficult. Try to learn about those on the receiving end of charity, and understand where they’re coming from and what may have led to their circumstances. Everyone needs help in some areas of life, and by serving others through charity, you’re helping them in a big way.
