How the Health Office Serves NTCA’s Student Body

Children often have aches that they can’t explain. When they walk into the Health Office at NTCA, Jody Cline helps them get to the root of the issue. She looks at every student who comes in as a whole person, not just a scratched up knee or a case of the sniffles. The goal is to allow children to return to class and get back to learning.

“The goal is to treat students holistically,” Cline said. “If the child can be treated in the Health Office and return back to class, we’ve accomplished our goal.”

Getting to the Root Cause

Students come into the Health Office with headaches and stomachaches that may be caused by anxiety or stress. Children have a difficult time making this connection, so it’s important that they have a chance to talk through it with a trusted adult. The pandemic causes students a lot of anxiety, especially those who recently returned to in-person instruction. Each student is evaluated based on their needs to see if there’s a problem that needs to be addressed.

“Instead of blindly following the rules, we look at each student as an individual and consider their specific circumstances,” Danae Gillam said.

Facilitating Care

The school keeps track of every visit and what each child is experiencing. The office also stores medications that students need to take. Emergency care items are collected at the Health Office to be distributed to classrooms when needed. There’s an almost constant flow of students who need help and who, in a public school setting, would be sent home, leaving the burden of figuring out the problem on their parents.

Students also receive care during school sponsored off campus events. The Health Office sends sports bags with medicine, splints, etc. to the traveling sports teams when they leave campus for games. They also send field trip bags with first aid, paperwork, meds, etc., that students may need when leaving school for the day.

Helping Parents

When children are sent home from school, the burden of taking care of them falls on the parents. With Health Office staff caring for each child as an individual, it is often easier to get to the core of the issue. A child who frequently visits the office could be experiencing anxiety. In this case, the counselor or chaplain is available to help with the parents’ consent. Since the office keeps detailed records, the school can also inform parents if a child needs medical assistance.

Not Just for Students

Teachers, staff, faculty, and students at both North Tampa Christian Academy and the North Tampa Christian Explorers preschool benefit from the Health Office. Since the school has innovative tools in various classrooms, teachers occasionally come in with injuries from machinery. Maintenance workers also come in with injuries. The idea is to avoid a situation where they need to go to the hospital when possible and to make sure they get there if they need to go.

How it Started

Before the Covid-19 pandemic, the receptionist or administrative assistant at NTCA would be in charge of giving out band-aids, ice packs, etc., as well as their administrative duties. This made life difficult for teachers, who would often have to take on the burden themselves. When students returned to in-person classes, it was clear that something needed to change.

In August 2020, the health office was among the many new services offered to students to help with the effects of the ongoing pandemic. Much like NTCA’s partner AdventHealth states in their tagline, the goal of this program is “extending the healing ministry of Christ.” The main difference is that the Health Office offers holistic solutions and the opportunity for students to continue learning after visiting. Children don’t always need to go home or go to the doctor when they’re not feeling well.

“Sometimes, a kid comes in and just needs a 5-minute break, and we give it to them. If they need a minute of prayer, we give it to them,” Cline said.

Meet Ministries Director Cesar Grassiotto

IMG_0993.jpg

Pastor Cesar Grassiotto, Ministries Director at NTCA, has discovered over the past 15 years that serving children and students is his life’s passion.

“There is indeed nothing that brings more joy to my heart than connecting young people to Jesus,” Pastor Cesar said.

Before finding his way to NTCA, Pastor Cesar had the privilege of being a youth pastor at five churches and the senior pastor of the Highland View Academy Church. As senior pastor, he helped organize the school campus ministry, which gave him the opportunity to assist the school Chaplain, staff and students. These experiences helped prepare him for his work at NTCA, which he believes God has called him to do.

Pastor Cesar sees education as a form of transformation. Being part of a school with so many talented and gifted students and teachers, he expects nothing less than to see extraordinary outcomes. This school has allowed him to become part of each student’s spiritual journey, which he finds to be the most rewarding part of his job.

In the short time Pastor Cesar has been at NTCA, he has already formed amazing and warm friendships. His wife Laura will soon be joining him at the school as a music teacher, expanding his network even more. When the two aren’t working together at school, they’re at home with their wonderful one-year-old daughter Olivia.

Growing up in São Paulo, Brazil, Pastor Cesar already knew he wanted to be a pastor. He went on to major in Pastoral Theology at UNASP in São Paulo, an Adventist university, and he earned his master’s in Divinity Studies from Andrews University. He’s finishing his doctorate in ministry with an emphasis on millennials and Gen Z from Andrews University. Pastor Cesar knew all along what he wanted to do, but his family wasn’t as sure.

“I had never thought about anything else besides being a pastor,” Pastor Cesar said. “My dad wanted me to be an engineer!”

Aside from his educational achievements, Pastor Cesar is an accomplished pastor. During his years as a youth pastor at the Dallas Brazillian Church, they were recognized as the fastest growing church in the North America division. While growing in his career, Pastor Cesar has traveled around the world. Out of all the places he’s visited, Jerusalem was his favorite. Someday, he would like to visit Iceland.

When Pastor Cesar has time to himself, he enjoys reading a good book while drinking his favorite Starbucks drink. His favorite book is The Prodigal God by Tim Keller, a pastor who wanted to use the story of the prodigal son to spread the message of Jesus’s love and the hope and salvation he provides. In his years of ministry, Pastor Cesar has discovered that faith and prayer can change lives.

“My past experience has only proven one very important thing: that prayer is the only certain method that can improve, enhance, heal, and completely change everything,” Pastor Cesar said.

If students take away one thing from attending NTCA, Pastor Cesar hopes that it is that they are loved and wanted by God, and that nothing can separate them from His love.

A New Partnership Paves the Way for Student Success

SVB Front .jpg

To Sarah Vande Berg, tennis was a way of life. Picking up her first racquet the age of 6, she became an outstanding tennis player committed to academic excellence and professional success. When she played tennis at USC Upstate, she observed that her teammates from other countries were often homesick. She invited them over on holidays to help them feel at home, uplifting them on and off the court. After a car accident tragically cut her life short, a developer from her hometown of Zephyrhills went to work constructing the Sarah Vande Berg (SVB) Tennis Center in her honor. The only tennis center of its kind, SVB carries on Sarah’s legacy of helping young players by providing lessons, leagues, socials, tournaments and more.

Finding the Perfect Fit

The training center quickly gained international attention for the opportunities it provided to young players. In late 2020, the SVB foundation realized they needed help to expand their offerings. That’s when they started searching for a new partner who shared their philosophy, that hands-on education was crucial for youth development. They looked for a school that emphasized real-world education — that’s where we came in. When SVB asked us to collaborate, we knew it would be a great fit. We shared the same values and long-term goals of enriching children’s lives.

Joining Forces with SVB Tennis Center

Our school’s project-based approach to learning and SVB’s passion for athletic excellence are a perfect match. Through this partnership, students pursue fitness goals while receiving an excellent education. At SVB, children learn sports like tennis and padel from the best coaches in the country. In the near future, athletic leaders from other sports will be joining the SVB team, and the facility will be expanded to include more programs.

Pandemic-Driven Innovation in Education and Beyond

At North Tampa Christian Academy, we are all about innovation. When COVID-19 shook up the world as we know it, we embraced the challenge. We got to work setting up the Titan Teacher Network, providing more virtual options to our students. While we worked on this, we noticed some innovations taking place in the outside world, as well. The world around us changed drastically and quickly, and we all adapted accordingly.

Questions to Ask at a School Open House

When you’re searching for a new school for your child to attend, it’s important to attend the open house. This is your opportunity to play an active role in your child’s education and experience the school firsthand. You’ll want to make sure it lives up to what you researched and expect in a school. North Tampa Christian Academy, a Tampa private school, warmly welcomes prospective families and encourages these questions to be asked.
