Bible Lessons About Talents and Gifts

Every child is born with talents that manifest in different ways. Over time, honing talents into skills can help them serve God and their communities. These lessons from the Bible can help your child figure out the best ways to use their God-given gifts for good.

Romans 12:6-8

“We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is encouraging, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.”

In his letter to the churches in Rome, Paul reminds all Christians that God gives us unique talents for unique purposes — and we get to use those gifts! No two people are given the same set of gifts, and that makes every child unique. Let your child explore their talents, and guide them through the best ways to use those gifts to serve with a glad heart.

Colossians 3:23-24

“Whatever you do work at it with all your heart as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward; it is the Lord Christ you are serving.”

The Apostle Paul knew that our priorities should be on using our gifts for God and not to show off around our friends. This verse also mentions the value of hard work and pursuing our gifts — even when the results aren’t immediate.  When hard work does not provide instant gratification, remind your child that they are working for the Lord. When all is said and done, the Lord will reward them in ways the world cannot.

Matthew 5:14-16

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

In these verses, Jesus reminds us that our talents will bring attention to us, but ultimately that attention goes back to God and doesn’t stop with us. Teach your child to use their talents in a humble way. Help them find a balance between hiding their gifts and bragging about the blessings they have been given.
